Reading a daycare's record in Massachusetts

Massachusetts publishes inspection records through EEC Child Care Search (Dept. of Early Education and Care). This page walks you to the record, decodes its vocabulary from the state's own definitions, and states what the archive cannot tell you. We never name, rate, or score a center.

First, the money

Records are half the decision. The other half is whether you can get help paying — run the free check for Massachusetts before you fall in love with a center you cannot fund.

The portal

EEC Child Care Search (Dept. of Early Education and Care)

Inspection and Monitoring Visit Reports since October 1, 2019 (once closed), with visit date, type of visit, and a Level of Compliance count (for example 79/79 items met), plus investigations opened on or after October 1, 2019 once closed, marked whether non-compliances were identified.

What this portal does not show

Visits before October 1, 2019 are NOT posted, and neither are pre-licensing visits before April 1, 2025 — those come from the EEC Regional Office. Open investigations are not shown.

How Massachusetts grades what it finds

Citations by 606 CMR with a compliance count; narrative, no severity classes.

Words like these are decoded, term by term, in the records decoder — always from the state's own published definitions, and always with the correction status given the same weight as the finding.

If you need to report something

Your EEC Regional Office or the complaint line; abuse and neglect to 1-800-792-5200.

Read any record in this order

  1. The license status first — active, conditional, or under action.
  2. The findings, newest to oldest, watching for the same rule cited twice.
  3. The correction status on each finding — corrected, corrected on site, plan accepted, or still open. It carries the same weight as the finding.
  4. The blind spots above: what this archive structurally cannot show you.

Portal facts checked October 2026. Only the state agency's record is the record — this page is a map to it, not a copy of it.
