Who skips the income test
These lanes waive or shortcut parts of the income test in California — if one is you, say so on page one of the application:
- CalWORKs (TANF) families
- Children referred by child protective services or in foster care
- Families experiencing homelessness
The co-pay
One flat MONTHLY family fee — it is not based on the cost of care or attendance. Families below 75% of state median income pay $0; at or above 75% SMI the fee may not exceed 1% of the family's adjusted monthly income.
Fee scale: Jul 2025 (CDSS family fee schedule, FY2025-26).
The gap: allowed in California
CDSS guidance states providers may charge families other amounts to close the gap between the state reimbursement (plus the family fee) and the private enrollment charge — ask for the full price in writing.
The gap estimate in the free check uses the state rate ceiling on this page and the price you enter. It is always an estimate — your child's rate category and your contract set the real figure.
California pays regional market-rate ceilings; no single statewide maximum was opened in the October 2026 check.
